Sometimes I create a new color because it is the next in the line - that is to say for example I have a lighter rust and a dark rust but I need one in between so the designers can shade. This is not the most fun! But necessary.
The most fun is when I play with the colors and find one pleasing. When I do the Dyers Collaboration packets this is what I do and they are limited edition colors - they are most of my imagination because I can do anything I want! When I play to add a color to my regular line I cannot be quite so bold! An example - for the last Dyers packets I tied the skien, and boiled it in red, then tied it again and boiled it in black. Very beautiful, this red and black yarn! But it would never sell as part of the regular line.

Alcune volte creo i colori giusto perche' sono i susseguenti nella linea - cioe' per esempio se ho un ruggine chiaro ed uno scuro ho bisogno di fare anche una via di mezzo perche' i designers possano valutare - , non e' molto divertente , ma necessario.
La parte piu' divertente e' quando gioco con i colori e trovo qualcosa che mi piace. Quando faccio i Dyers Collaboration packets (ndr : e' una spledida iniziativa che hanno fatto quest'anno molti dyers cioe' propongono un pacco a stagione a sorpresa ricco di fili e stoffe tinti a mano)creo colori nuovi e in edizione limitata .
e questa e' la cosa piu' divertente che faccio perche' quando aggiungo dei colori alla mia linea , non posso essere cosi' audace e tranquilla.
per esempio proprio nell'ultimo packet fatto ho tinto un filato , quindi l'ho bollito nel rosso , poi ho tinto di nuovo e l'ho bollito nel nero . Splendido filo rosso e nero , ma non potro' mai inserirlo nella linea regolare.

Mi piacerebbe sapere che sostanze usi per tingere i filati..
visto che hai iniziato a casa, suppongo che siano tutte
sostanze facilmente reperibili

I'd like to know which substances you use to dye threads.. since you hand-dyed them at home, I guess they could be easy to find

I personally use silk dyes and acid, and steam the floss. But you are right - it is easy and there are many ways to do this!
For silk you can use Easter egg dyes or Koolaid and vinegar. (These may be called different things in Italy!).
Soak the silk in white vinegar and wring it out. Then dab on the mixed Koolaid or Easter egg colors till you like it. One way is to dip each section in the colors, and wring out as you go. (This does ruin the dye for subsequent dips). You can also put the skein in one color, and take it out (it'll be mostly solid). Then spatter it with a darker or other color. When you get GORGEOUS! then wrap it in plastic wrap and stick it in the microwave for a few seconds, or if you don't want to use your microwave for dyeing and then food, wrap it in plastic and cover with black plastic or just wrap in plastic and put it in the sun for a few hours. It'll get hot!
Rinse it out - there shouldn't be color run off - and let it dry. VOILA!
For cotton I'd use Rit (many famous cotton dyers do) and follow the directions. (Maybe this is called cold water Dylon in some other countries!)
Another really nice dyeing medium is paint on dyes. Color Hues at Things Japanese is excellent stuff for silk. (http://www.silkthings.com/dyes.asp)
And for any other fiber you care to dye, I love Ozecraft Dyes (you can get them in the US from www.lisasheaven.com - there are also many places that sell it from Australia) These don't need any additives.
With both of these products you can also use already dyed skeins you might have in your collection - just follow the directions.
I also sell silk floss yardage for you to dye yourself!

personalmente uso le tinture per seta (metodo acido) e cuocio a vapore il filo di seta.
Ma hai ragione a pensare che sia semplice e ci sono molti modi per fare questo!
Per seta potete usare le tinture per colorare le uova di Pasqua O Koolaid ed aceto. (questi possono essere denominati cose differenti in Italia!).
Impregni la seta in aceto bianco ed strizza bene.
Allora dai il Koolaid mixed o i colori dell'uovo di Pasqua ,
Con il metodo one-way devi tuffare ogni sezione nei colori ed quindi strizzare bene subito prima di andare avanti alla prossima sezione. (questo rovina la tintura per i tuffi successivi).
Potete anche mettere la matassa in un colore e lo eliminate ( è principalmente solido). Allora puoi spruzzarlo con un colore più scuro o altro.
allora spostalo in involucro di plastica ed mettilo - appeso - nella microonde per alcuni secondi, o se non desiderate usare il vostro microonde degli alimenti per le tinture, allora puoi metterli avvolti nella plastica e con un'ulteriore copertura di plastica nera e metterli al sole per alcune ore.
Con questo procedimenti si ottengono colori caldi !
quindi sciacqua bene tutto ed e' fatta !
Molte famose dyers del cotone usano il metodo Rit . (forse questo è denominato acqua fredda Dylon in alcuni altri paesi!) Un altro mezzo realmente piacevole per tingere è mettere la vernice sulle tinture.

What a fun question!
Years ago, I designed a series of architectural specialty stitch pieces in monochromes and needed to dye the fabric and fibers to match. That was how I started to dye!
When the Internet got so big, I found these fibers easy to market and the business got bigger and bigger till I had a choice. I could dye for a living or could continue being an RN. I did not ever think that the business would get so big! But as much as I loved nursing, I made a good choice for me.
Ché domanda divertente!! Anni fa, ho progettato una serie di parti architettoniche del punto di specialità nei monochromes ed ho dovuto tingere il tessuto e le fibre per abbinare. Quello era come ho cominciato tingersi! Quando il Internet ha ottenuto così grande, ho trovato queste fibre facile introdurre ed il commercio e' diventato più grande e più grande finchè ho avuto una scelta. potevo dipingere per vivere o continuare ad essere una Marina militare.(questa e' la traduzione con il traduttore,ma credo sia stato un 'infermiera...) Non ho pensato mai che il commercio diventasse cosi' grande! Ma tanto come amavo nutrire,(sempre il traduttore..credo sia corretto tanto amavop fare l''infermiera,bisognerebbe chiederlo..) ho fatto una buona scelta per me.

Spesso chi si avvicina per la prima volta ai filati di seta e a quelli tinti a mano ha voglia di provare proprio i colori piu' particolari .

I think that the colours you create for them are so beautiful that you should put them into your regular line .
Often the ladies whom try for the first time the silk thread and overall the hand dyed fibers like to try the the most strange and particular colours :-)

I feel the same way!!! But we all agreed for these packets that the colors would only be in these packets and not available any other way. I think if I continue to join in the packets next year I would like that the colors can join the regular line after a certain number of months!

do have some Italian customers but in Europe most of my customers come from England and France.
There is a real hunger in America for something very different with an international flair though it is only a very small market at this time.

Nothing very complicated - usually just the designs people ask me to convert.. I try to do ones that are current, that people can still buy, and that have a wide appeal.

It is best to choose the fibers for the size of the fabric you are using. Chenille is a very thick and fuzzy fiber (for petting too!) and is too thick for any but the most bold places in regular cross stitch.
È meglio scegliere le fibre per il formato del tessuto che state usando.La ciniglia è una fibra molto spessa e increspata(da toccare anche!) ed è troppo spesso per quasi tutti i ricami ma il piu' delineato e' nel punto croce (credo intenda che rimane piu' regolare)

Ma quindi questo filato non e' nato per essere usato nel ricamo?

Yes it is for embroidery. It is very bold! dade used it to good effect in her sampler, and I've used it for a pumpkin in a sampler, where I wanted a lot of texture.
I think it can be marvelous for an accent or adjunct, but it's too large to stitch an entire piece with.
Sì è per ricamo. È molto doppio! dade lo ha usato con buoni risultati nel suo sampler ed io l'ho usato per una zucca in un sampler, in cui volevo maggiore spessore. Penso che possa essere meraviglioso per accentuare o per un'aggiunta, ma è troppo grande per ricamarci una parte intera.

I haven't noticed this kind of craft since I saw it on American magazines and I really appreciated it. So I'd like to ask Vikki whether any Italian embroidering magazine had ever called her for an interview or a showing of her threads (I guess no). And what about magazines from other countries (they look more specialistic and novelty-oriented) ?

Di solito trovo questi effetti sulle riviste e schemi stranieri,
si tratta di prendere un filo di un colore e un filo di un altro (anche colori molto diversi, ad esempio rosa piu' azzurro) , per creare una sfumatura nuova. Spesso si fa anche con i metallizzati, ad esempio due fili di mouline' normale e un filo di metallizzato, cosi' il metallizzato si vede appena e non e' troppo luccicante.
Non sapevi che esistono riviste italiane di ricamo???
Siamo proprio...l'ultima ruota del carro (sara' traducibile questa frase???)

i find this effects on magazine and strangers patterns,not italian..
you take 2 thread,one of one colour and the second in another color,different from the first,so you made a differnt effect..
you also take two thread of mouline and one of metallic,so it isnt too much sparkling..
you don't know that there are italian cross stitch magazine?
there aren't comparison between us and other country :-(

No - I didn't even know that there WERE Italian embroidery magazines! I have been recently in 4 or 5 issues of cross stitch magazines from England but they don't usually ask you for anything. They just write about you!

ciao vikki nel tuo sito vi e' una parte dedicata alle conversioni , cioe' alla traduzione di molti spendidi disegni di diversi disegners eseguibili con i tuoi fili. con quale criterio scegli i disegni da tradurre ? hello vikki in your site there is a part dedicated to the conversions, that is to the translation of many wonderful designs of various disegners to do with yours fibers , with which criterion you choose the designs translate?	Nothing very complicated - usually just the designs people ask me to convert.. I try to do ones that are current, that people can still buy, and that have a wide appeal. Niente di troppo complicato - in genere sono i disegni che i clienti mi chiedoon di convertire. Provo a fare quelli che sono correnti, che la gente possa ancora comprare e che piacciono di più.
Ragazze, avete visto che meraviglia, la ciniglia sul sito di Vikki? MI chiedevo: i vari tipi di filato si adattano ognuno a un diverso tipo di ricamo? hi ladies , have you seen how wonderful is the chenille in the site of vikki? ...but how the different fibers are choosen for different embroidery?	It is best to choose the fibers for the size of the fabric you are using. Chenille is a very thick and fuzzy fiber (for petting too!) and is too thick for any but the most bold places in regular cross stitch. È meglio scegliere le fibre per il formato del tessuto che state usando.La ciniglia è una fibra molto spessa e increspata(da toccare anche!) ed è troppo spesso per quasi tutti i ricami ma il piu' delineato e' nel punto croce (credo intenda che rimane piu' regolare)
Ma quindi questo filato non e' nato per essere usato nel ricamo? so isn't this fiber meant for embroidering?	Yes it is for embroidery. It is very bold! dade used it to good effect in her sampler, and I've used it for a pumpkin in a sampler, where I wanted a lot of texture. I think it can be marvelous for an accent or adjunct, but it's too large to stitch an entire piece with. Sì è per ricamo. È molto doppio! dade lo ha usato con buoni risultati nel suo sampler ed io l'ho usato per una zucca in un sampler, in cui volevo maggiore spessore. Penso che possa essere meraviglioso per accentuare o per un'aggiunta, ma è troppo grande per ricamarci una parte intera.
Ciao Vikki, volevo chiederti se nei tuoi schemi utilizzi i fili mescolati tra di loro, a me piace molto creare effetti particolari usando questo "trucco". E a te? E a voi, ragazze? And about you ladies? io non sapevo di questa "tecnica" che ho visto utilizzata su riviste straniere e il risultato mi piace molto, a questo proposito volevo sapere da Vikki se viene contattata per interviste e presentazione dei materiali da riviste di ricamo italiane (penso proprio di no) o straniere (che mi sembrano più tecniche e attente alle novità). So I'd like to ask Vikki whether any Italian embroidering magazine had ever called her for an interview or a showing of her threads (I guess no). And what about magazines from other countries (they look more specialistic and novelty-oriented) ? Di solito trovo questi effetti sulle riviste e schemi stranieri, si tratta di prendere un filo di un colore e un filo di un altro (anche colori molto diversi, ad esempio rosa piu' azzurro) , per creare una sfumatura nuova. Spesso si fa anche con i metallizzati, ad esempio due fili di mouline' normale e un filo di metallizzato, cosi' il metallizzato si vede appena e non e' troppo luccicante. Non sapevi che esistono riviste italiane di ricamo??? Siamo proprio...l'ultima ruota del carro (sara' traducibile questa frase???) i find this effects on magazine and strangers patterns,not italian.. you take 2 thread,one of one colour and the second in another color,different from the first,so you made a differnt effect.. you also take two thread of mouline and one of metallic,so it isnt too much sparkling.. you don't know that there are italian cross stitch magazine? there aren't comparison between us and other country :-( bye	No - I didn't even know that there WERE Italian embroidery magazines! I have been recently in 4 or 5 issues of cross stitch magazines from England but they don't usually ask you for anything. They just write about you!
